獅子は西域の琉勒(そろく)国（現在のウイグル自治区カシュガル地区）から贈られたのが初めといいます。神格化され、仏法の威力の象徴とされています。古代インドで仏様の守護神として、仏様の両脇に獅子が置かれたことが発祥とされています。仏法の威力の象徴として文殊菩薩(知恵の神様、学業成就)が乗る神獣になりました。古人は獅子を(百獣の王)として、鎮めたり、魔除けとしての効果と護法の益があると尊びました。獅子は中国の文化に吸収され、吉祥の特色を持った縁起物に進化していきました。
凶相から魔除けの意味が強い
獅子の置き物は財産運や仕事運を高めるとも言われています。悪いものを祓うことで、多くの人間が望む財産や仕事に関する良い運気を引き寄せることができるとされているからです。

It is said that the lion was first given by the western region of Ryukyu (now Uygur Autonomous Region). It has been deified and is a symbol of the power of Buddhism.
